To celebrate the Land Rover Defender’s extraordinary life – Land Rover’s most important and longest-running model – the Jaguar Land Rover Global PR team briefed Foxtrot Papa to create a unique, coffee-table book as part of a whole year of multimedia celebrations.
As Deputy Editor, the team and I wanted to place people and their experiences at the book’s core via amazing stories, incredible photography and illustrations. We wanted to explore the effect the vehicle has had on its many fans. We also wanted readers to feel a sense of the Defender itself when reading this book; it needed to be charming, demonstrating purposeful style and design pedigree.
Totalling 204 pages, the book consists of 10 chapters with each one representing an aspect of the vehicle’s multi-purpose role. We unearthed heartwarming opinions and stories from a wide range of Land Rover admirers, including TV presenters, owners and enthusiasts.
For Chapter 1, ‘Road Trips Retold’, I researched and retold 10 legendary overland journeys, all made possible by the Series Land Rover or Defender, to demonstrate just how revolutionary this vehicle was as an enabler for global adventures in the post-war era.
I also interviewed numerous Land Rover employees, both past and present, and several Land Rover ambassadors, too, including a personal hero of mine, the legendary explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes.
The ICON book was a Gold Winner in the 2017 CMA International Content Marketing Awards – Best Use of Print within a Multi-Media Campaign.
